Dear first-year students,

We are pleased to welcome you as future students of Latin American Studies at the University of Cologne! You will find all the information you need to successfully start your studies here.

We have also put together a video for you with the most important information about our study program Latin America Studies and Business, Economics and Social Sciences degree program. You can find the video here .

Take a look and you will receive initial or further information about the student advisory service, the structure of the degree program, the focus languages, the wide range of non-university activities, the numerous university partnerships and the student council.

If you would like to choose Portuguese as your first language and already have previous knowledge, a necessary placement test will probably take place in September (exact date to follow).

For Spanish , you must already submit a B1 language certificate. If you do not yet have a B1 certificate, you can still start the RSL course and take a course at the same time, e.g. at the VHS Cologne . In the other areas (literature, history, economics/social sciences), you can start your studies as normal regardless of your language level, subject to specific course requirements.

In September, there will be a welcome event for all first-semester Students of Latin American Studies where you will receive important information about the degree, the Fachschaft and more.

Office hours

Office hours in the winter semester 2025/26:

We offer the following office hours in the CLAC office  (in person, via telephone) for prospective students and Bachelor students: Thursdays: 12:00-13:30.
For Master's students and for consultations on studies abroad , please make an individual appointment via e-mail: mail-clac(at)uni-koeln.de.

You can also make appointments at another time by e-mail or telephone.

The appointments take place in the CLAC office (Philosophikum, 1st floor, room 1.011).
